S7 Airlines is the first Russian airline approved for GLS landing
S7 Airlines1, a member of the oneworld® global aviation alliance®, is the first Russian airline which received official approval of the Federal Air Transport Agency for approach based on the signals of the GLS satellite system (GNSS Landing System).
GLS is a satellite landing system which is now widely implemented worldwide. The approval was received for three airline aircrafts, Boeing 737-800NG.
“S7 Airlines actively implements the latest modern technologies intended to improve the safety rate and flight regularity. Simultaneously with our foreign partners, we are one of the first airline companies in the world to start the use of the GLS system. Among other advantages GLS landing will allow to improve flight regularity, which is one of our priority goals in passenger service”, Vadim Klebanov, Globus Airlines General Director, noted.
More than 50 airdromes in Russia are today equipped with GBAS ground-based augmentation stations allowing GLS landing. Kemerovo International Airport and Rosсhino International Airport in Tyumen have already received approval for GLS landing, State Air Traffic Management Corporation plans to certify 10-15 airports per year for GLS landing.
The main purpose of such equipment is to determine the aircraft position even more accurate and avoid errors resulting from any possible environmental effects on satellite signals received by the airliner, including during accurate landing approach.
Innovative technologies used during the system development allow aircraft crews to approach even if traditional airport equipment is switched off or broken due to some reasons. Already today GLS equipped aircrafts can land in weather conditions which correspond to ICAO Category I, and in years to come it is planned that GLS landing will allow accurate landing up to ICAO Category IIIA.
