S7 Airlines adopts machine learning for aircraft maintenance


S7 Airlines, a oneworld® global airline alliance member, has been the first among Russian airlines to complete the development of a pilot system of predictive maintenance for Airbus A319 aircraft. During the year, the majority of S7 Airlines fleet is to be connected to the system.

The system allows to predict possible defects for each S7 Airlines aircraft in a long-run prospect by analysing the array of historical data on maintenance of aircraft and the operation of its individual components. It is planned, that the system will reduce the number of flight delays due to technical issues.

The system determines the probability of the occurrence of different defects types in a certain period in the future. If the probability is higher than the established threshold, it recommends conducting additional diagnostics of the aircraft.

The software developed by S7 Airlines experts together with Datadvance, one of the leading prognostic analytics companies in Russia, is used to analyse the data and build a mathematical model. S7 Technics experts acted as consultants for engineering and technical maintenance of aircraft. Today, the data set includes the values recorded by aircraft telemetry systems, the database of S7 Technics — maintenance and repair holding company — and meteorological data for the period from 2012 to 2017.

The company’s experts are developing the system. The next step is the introduction of a more efficient industrial system which is able to download data in real time and has a user-friendly interface.
